How to Calculate Wattage

How to Calculate Wattage – 4 Steps

You may find yourself completely puzzled about calculating wattage of your appliances or any electronic device.  Actually, getting the wattage is quite simple.  All you need to know is the formula, the number of volts and amperes of your appliance or device.  From there, everything is set to be computed.  Follow these steps for your computation:

  1. First things first: Know the formula. Get the number of volts and amperes of your electronic device or appliance.  The formula for getting wattage is Watts= Amperes x Volts.

  1. Get the number of volts and ampere from your device or appliance. Your gadget, device or appliance should bear a sticker stating the number of volts and ampere. If there’s none, get the manual. The stats are surely there. Remember that the volts sign is “V,” while the ampere sign is “A.”

  1. Since you have the facts at hand, you can use the formula for wattage calculation. Multiply the number of Amperes by the number of Volts and you can easily get the number of watts. Example: the given no. of amperes is 10.40 and the given no. of volts is 25.  It goes this way… 10.40A x 25= W.  The answer is 260W. Take note that the number of volts and amperes stated in your device might be the ceiling amount of V or A the device has.  Hence, your wattage calculation might be higher than its actual wattage.

  1. Base your usage of a circuit or inverter according to your computed number of watts. If the watt rate of your circuit is less than or equal to the amount of your computed wattage, by all means… don’t use it!
