Mercedes-Benz’ G-series has been on the roads for already 36 years, enough to be classified as a classic machine. For 2016, Mercedes Benz has established a more enticing G-class in the body of G550. Not only it is packed with charm and what the modern era has to give, but it is also more powerful and more efficient this time around.
Direct rivals for G550 (or G-Class) are Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus LX 570, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
Release, Price and Updates
Starting next month, November 2015, Mercedes-Benz dealerships are to market G550 at a hefty starting price of $121,000. Including at the base price are destination charges, restyled body and the 19-inch, 5-spoke wheels. Restyling the body, the brand revamped the bumpers and enlarged the wheel arches. Now, these may just be few touches considering the increase of price from the 2015 model sums for up to $4,500. But here’s the catch: the new V-8 core right under the hood, weighs worthier than the price increase.
The New Core
A new 4.0L turbocharged V-8 can summon 416hp and 450 lb.-ft. torque, signaling the increase of 34 hp and 59 lb.-ft. compared to its predecessor’s 5.5L V-8. Also, the older model made a 12/15 MPG rating when it comes to fuel economy but 2016 model now gives a much “economical” 13/16 MPG.
